How to review your Chess.com games for free

Chess.com Game Review is excellent — and it is also the first feature most players hit a paywall on. If you want a full post-game walkthrough without a subscription, you have options.

A free Chess.com account can use Game Review, but unlimited reviews and the deeper engine settings sit behind Premium. Chess.com does not publish a hard public number for the free allowance, so the limit feels different from one week to the next. If you play more than a handful of games, you will run out.

What Chess.com’s own review gives you

Credit where it is due: Chess.com’s Game Review is a strong product. You get accuracy, move classifications (Brilliant through Blunder), and a coach-style walkthrough. If you already pay for Premium, use it. This article is for the case where you do not — or where you have used today’s free reviews and still have games to look at.

Three ways to review a Chess.com game without Premium

1. Review from your Chess.com username

The least friction is a tool that already knows how to fetch your public archive. Chesstastic does that: enter your Chess.com username (no password), pick a finished game, and walk it move by move. The engine runs in your browser. There is no subscription.

1. Open Chesstastic and choose Game Review.
2. Enter your Chess.com username. Only public games are loaded.
3. Pick a game. Choose how deeply the engine should look.
4. Step through the moves. Accuracy and coaching notes appear as you go.

If you have a single game link instead of a full archive, you can import a Chess.com URL or paste a PGN.

2. Export the PGN yourself

Every Chess.com game can be downloaded as PGN from the share / download control on the game page. Paste that PGN into any analysis board that accepts it. This is the classic workaround, and it still works. The cost is extra clicking: open the game, copy, switch sites, paste, request analysis.

3. Import the game into Lichess

Lichess computer analysis is free and very good. Copy the PGN, paste it at lichess.org, and request an analysis. If you already live on Lichess, this is a natural habit. If you play on Chess.com and just want the review without an extra account, a username-based flow is faster.

What a free review should actually show you

A useful post-game review is not a wall of engine numbers. You want to know which moves changed the evaluation, whether a tactic was missed, and what a stronger idea looked like in that position. Accuracy is a headline; the learning is in the moments labelled Mistake and Blunder.

That is the same job Chess.com Premium review does. A free Chess.com game review alternative should still grade your moves, keep a coach voice on your side of the board, and let you step backward when something does not make sense.

Start with yesterday’s loss

You do not need to review every blitz game. Pick the one that still bothers you. Run a free review, stop on the first swing in evaluation, and sit with that position for a minute before you hit next. That single habit beats skimming twenty accuracy scores.
